Jones mentioned that Kyle Tucker thought Cal might go out with middle fingers waving were it not for the contract.

Not to forgive Cal for his failures this year, but would you blame him?

This fanbase is full of lunatics.

It is, but some of the things the fanbase says about Cal are rooted in real concerns.

There are two concerns as I see them.

One, that Cal can't coach "X's and O's." I have never agreed fully with that one although I think there's at least some merit to it.

The other one is about the one-and-done issue.

That is a definite concern that I do think Cal has both missed the boat on and has not been as concerned about as he should have been about how his experiment was going to end up affecting the program. He got behind the 8-ball a little and now we're paying for it.

Right. Like I said, there are legitimate issues and Cal isnt above criticism. He is being paid handsomely enough that it comes with the job, and he shouldnt be so defensive about it.

But at the same time, there is a portion of our fanbase that ignores the historical success Cal has had here. And unfortunately they are the most vocal.

Honestly, yeah. I would blame him.

I can understand wanting to keep some of us at distance, but UK made Cal one of the 2-3 richest coaches in America and made him a household name in college basketball. Our fans can be absurd, but he's not above reproach.

Especially not since he's putting together the worst season any of us have ever seen.

An interesting thing can happen if Kentucky shocks the world and wins the SEC Tournament (which they won't), then goes into the NCAA Tournament and loses in the first round.

You know Cal, being Cal, will frame that as a success. "Look at the miracle run that team had! They finally started to play for their brothers, what?"

The fanbase could really turn at that point even more than they are. Because we know, and Cal knows, and Cal knows we know, that the 2020-2021 Kentucky Wildcats have been brutality in its most distilled form.

Short of the unrealistic, winning the SEC tourney and winning a game or two in the NCAA, the best thing that could happen would be for this team to lose in the 1st round of the SEC tourney and just end this miserable season. Do not leave any wiggle room for anybody to even try to celebrate anything that happens in the next few games.

I'd love for them to make a run to the SEC title game but it would just be setting ourselves up for a major letdown.

Come on, man! The guy with a lifetime contract FINALLY decides to shake things up and you are okay with this being a lost season? This is Kentucky man. He’s earned a redemption shot but his stubbornness has got to hit the trail.

Yep, I would. Kentucky basketball fans have long been a known commodity. He makes more than any NBA owner would pay.
PLUS I guarantee there were plenty of fans that were giddy about the lifetime contract deal.

This is his baby. As he says....let me coach. Okay big guy..you got it, plus all that comes with it.

                          You have a good point.

I just think there is a very vocal portion of our fanbase at the moment that is ignoring all the great things Cal has done during his tenure. The grass isn't always greener on the other side.

He's not above criticism, and he gets paid enough that seasons like this are thoroughly unacceptable (to say nothing about his snide comments to the fanbase), but he should be given a considerable leash to fix this thing.

I agree. He deserves one horrible season at least. I think what burns is not many can see a way out unless he completely changes the thing that made him soooooo successful.
and fewer comments to the fan base about success being how many NBA contracts are signed may be advisable.

So, I got a text from someone today who said not to close the door on a BJ Boston return. He said it is still more likely than not that he leaves but he has heard there that he is considering a return.

I believe he is likely to leave as the average mock draft position for him is 23 but it is interesting to hear he and his family are at least discussing coming back.

I find it a little unsettling that a player who can't hit lay-ups is being projected to play professional basketball next season.
